The Sunday Profile: Geoffrey Tjakra, Artist

Small Suitcase

“Geoff, help! My pot is collapsing,” comes the cry from across the garage studio. Ceramics teacher Geoffrey Tjakra comes over and effortlessly pulls the rebellious clay back into an upright position.

He is a natural teacher — patient and good humored, willing to show us for the umpteenth time how to center a lump of clay, how to coordinate foot, wheel, fingers and eyes behind the potter’s wheel.

Tjakra is also an artist, and his work is currently on display at the newly renovated Museum Seni Rupa Dan Keramik (Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum) as part of the exhibition “Seni Keramik Kontemporer,” or “Contemporary Ceramics.”
