Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry is looking north to attract more cruise visitors from Asia.
The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority and PNG Ports Corporation Ltd participated in the first Cruise Shipping Asia Trade Show and Conference in Singapore last month as part of the effort to tap this market.
Alotau, Rabaul, Madang and coastlines of Sepik were identified as potential tourist destinations which are strategically convenient for cruise ships coming from Asia. Participants heard that parts of south east Asia and Papua New Guinea could be emerging destinations for well-travelled visitors. Australian Expedition cruises is also looking at increasing visits to PNG for its cultural highlights and adventure tours.
As a direct result of PNG’s attendance at the event, an 800 passenger Russian cruise vessel has already confirmed it will come to PNG as early as February 2012. Negotiations with other operators are underway.
