Tuvalu closes its waters to foreign fishers

Tuvalu has closed its waters to foreign fishing vessels this year in an effort to limit the tuna catch reports Radio New Zealand.

Tuvalu follows Solomon Islands and Nauru, which closed their waters after their allocations under the Vessel Day Scheme for foreign fishers was used.

As Parties to the Nauru Agreement which aims to cut tuna fishing to sustainable levels, a total number of days for fishing is set for the PNA area and then divided between the members.
