Cook Islands tuna to be canned in Taiwan and sent back home

Albacore tuna caught in the Cook Islands exclusive economic zone will be sold under a new Cook Islands Golden Tuna label reports Radio New Zealand International.

Cook Islands marine resources minister, Teina Bishop has completed an agreement with the Yuh Yow Fisheries Group which will allow that company to process part of its Cook Islands catch at its Taiwan cannery.

Bishop says some of the catch will be returned to the Cook Islands, but more importantly, a niche export market for albacore should be developed.

About 5000 metric tons of albacore caught every year in Cook Islands is processed in American Samoa for United States markets.
