ASEAN members discussed Timor Leste’s application to join the grouping during their meeting in Bali this week.
Presstv.com reports that Indonesia and Cambodia both support East Timor’s bid to join ASEAN, however other members are more cautious, and want to strengthen economic cooperation and integration before expanding.
Papua New Guinea has also applied to join ASEAN, while Fiji has shown interest in membership.
The Singapore embassy in Jakarta says at the ASEAN Coordinating Council meeting there was consensus on Singapore’s proposals to establish a working group to discuss all aspects related to the application by Timor Leste as well as its possible implications to the bloc.
The working group will assess whether Timor Leste is able to meet the ASEAN Charter’s requirements on the admission of new members.
