Nauru’s president quits amid corruption claims

Nauru’s President, Marcus Stephen, has resigned amid allegations of corruption involving a phosphate dealer in Thailand.

Pacnews reports that Stephen will be replaced as President by Freddie Pitcher, a former minister of commerce industry and environment. Stephen will remain in parliament.

His resignation follows calls for a no confidence motion after he allegedly asked a Thailand based businessman for a kickback on the sale of 25,000 cubic tonnes of phosphate.
