Kiribati seamen back in demand

There has been a revival in the demand for Kiribati seamen to crew foreign vessels reports the Kiribati Independent.

In 2011 there are over 1,000 Kiribati seamen working on foreign vessels.Last year that figure stood at 600, recording ‘a very big jump,’ says deputy Captain Superintendent Etekieru Rimon.

Captain Superintendent Rimon says the upswing can be attributed to improved attitudes of their seamen and more training on social

Kiribati recruitment had dropped off following reports of drug and alcohol related incidences in the past.
