Ni-Vanuatu urged to support WTO membership

Vanuatu’s government has encouraged its people to support the country’s joining of the World Trade Organisation.

Radio New Zealand reports the Vanuatu Christian Council says Vanuatu doesn’t need WTO membership to survive.

But deputy prime minister Ham Lini says Vanuatu needs to be part of a regulatory regime if they are to participate fully in the modern trading environment.

Vanautu withdrew from an earlier attempt to join the WTO in 2001. It’s likely to become a formal member this year.
