Tonga opens fisheries to foreigners

Tonga has opened its tuna fisheries to licensed foreign fishing vessels in a bid to boost the declining industry.

Pacnews reports that a Taiwanese fishing vessel is expected to arrive in Tonga this month to operate from a local base, after paying a licence fee of USD$20,000.

Two fishing companies currently operate in the Kingdom; Kool Fresh which buys fish from local fishermern for export but is selling off its own vessels, and Oripec, which has one fishing vessel.
