Solomons diplomatic appointments questioned

The Solomon Islands parliamentary opposition has criticized the recent selection of new Ambassadors to Taiwan and Fiji.

Patterson Oti is the new Solomon Islands High Commissioner in Suva, and Laurie Chan is to become Ambassador in Taipei.

But the Island Sun quotes Opposition Leader, Dr Derek Sikua as asking whether they are the most suitable candidates.

“I am sure there are a lot of young and enthusiastic career diplomats out there in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who should be considered for these overseas appointments. I think it is high time that we should seriously consider posting out our young female career diplomats and not persons nearing or in the retirement age,” he said.

The current Ambassador to Taiwan, Victor Ngele will take up a new posting in Malaysia.
