Operations suspended at Freeport mine

All operations have ceased at Freeport mine in Indonesia’s Papua province.

On Friday three contract workers on the way to the mine were  shot dead.

The three were part of a workforce brought in to keep the mine going, as a strike amongst regular workers enters its second month.

There was another fatal shooting near the mine earlier this month, and tensions there appear to be escalating.

It’s not clear when operations will resume. All access to the mine has been blocked.
