Vanuatu quiet on West Papua independence

Vanuatu’s Prime Minister didn’t mention West Papua during his address to the United Nations in September, despite the Vanuatu parliament voting unanimously to raise the issue at the UN less than a year ago.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reports West Papua independence advocates as claiming that under Prime Minister Sato Kilman, Vanuatu support for independence has waned.

In 2004, former Vanuatu Foreign Affairs Minister Barak Sope told the General Assembly that West Papua must be added once more in the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

In contrast Kilman instead referred to New Caledonia and French Polynesia when he talked about colonialism and imperialism and the two Pacific countries’ right to independence last month.
