No immediate change to PNG mining laws

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister has assured foreign investors there will be no dramatic changes to PNG’s mining legislation.

In August mining minister Byron Chan  said resource ownership will change from the state to customary owners, creating great concern in the mining industry.

But Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says changes will be made only after consultation across the mining industry.

Mining contributes 80 percent of PNG’s foreign exchange earnings, and is dominated by foreign investment from Australia and Asia.’
