More local involvement needed in Pacific fisheries

A Papua New Guinea trade advisor says a regional fund should be established to enable Pacific islanders to own fishing boats and operate their own fishing plants.

The Post Courier newspaper reports Wayne Golding as saying current ownership of boats is less than five percent. Asian investors dominate the industry in the Pacific islands region.

He says a concerted effort is needed to develop more added-value production within the Pacific, cross-border investments and ownership of the activities across the total supply chain from fishing to retail markets.
Golding says opportunities include crewing and cross border mobility, vessel ownership, processing intermediary and finished products, manufacturing of can, cartons, labels and others feeding into processing activities and other service activities such as provisioning, equipment, consumables, fuelling, health.
